about

Ten years ago at age 20, I released my first DIY album. I titled it "Bang Thangs" - there's no meaning behind it - I flippantly chose it because the collection didn't have an overarching concept; each song was more of an exercise in journal-style creative expression of things I felt / experienced. A few were just silly tongue-in-cheek songs, others more earnestly written. Each song was shared via Tumblr as they were completed, when social media was less universally used and when Tumblr had a supportive, niche, show-and-tell community of writers, makers, and listeners.

I crudely recorded each song without professional audio equipment or discernment, without consideration for song structure or psychoacoustic impact, etc. The songs were recorded with the internal mic of my 2010 Macbook via GarageBand. The percussion sounds were made by hand (usually banging my fist and knuckles on a table and modifying the sound with built-in effects to try to give it more depth) and I didn't know how to edit out background noise. The result was an assortment of short, quiet, repetitive, low-quality, bedroom recordings that I have a hard time categorizing into a single genre.

I wanted to revisit this collection when I realized it had been nearly ten years since I released it, and decided to use the occasion as an opportunity for a kind of creative exercise. I listened to each song, and re-recorded it from scratch using new tools and skills I've acquired over the years. There are a couple of exceptions - I kind of liked some of the songs most in their lo-fi forms, so for those few I only did a quick remaster. Mostly just brought up the gain and tried to eliminate any really awful sounding sounds from them, but pretty much left them as is.

"BTXY" simply stands for "Bang Thangs: 10 Years."

I dedicate it to the kind people of Tumblr that supported, complimented, and encouraged my music even when it was objectively crappy to listen to. I hope the people I met online over a decade ago get a kick out of this resurrection and I hope new listeners do too. BTXY will be released on platforms everywhere on October 25, 2021, the official anniversary date.
